In the bluegrass
world, itÕs not uncommon to hear about a benefit show or festival
to help out a local musician, or a struggling family in need.
However, in Columbus, Ohio, there is a benefit festival that
rivals no other when it comes to benefiting a worthy cause and
providing a classic bluegrass festival environment for your
own enjoyment! Darrel Adkins and the Bluegrass Classic present
Musicians Against Childhood Cancer, a festival in the memory
of Mandy Adkins and benefiting St, Jude ChildrenÕs Research
Hopsital. Over the years, MACC has donated over $265,000 dollars
to St. Jude and the YMCA, continuing to help children and their
families with life-threatening illness.
Mandy Adkins,
was diagnosed with an inoperable brain stem tumor, and lost
her battle with cancer on November 25, 2000. Her family had
experienced first hand the devastation childhood cancer causes
the patient and the family. After witnessing the great need
that exists for continued research and highly qualified doctors
and staff, they felt compelled to do something to help make
sure that other children, facing the biggest challenge of their
young lives, have hope and the best possible care. With this
in mind, Darrel and Phyllis Adkins founded M.A.C.C., Musicians
Against Childhood Cancer. The Adkins were well known in the
area for promoting high quality concerts and festivals at the
Frontier Ranch and more recently at the Hoover Y-Park in Columbus,
Ohio, for over 25 years. Their shows have drawn thousands of
fans from all over the world.
Aside from
the IBMA and SPBGMA conventions yearly, where else can you see
such a wide variety of national bluegrass talent all from the
comfort of your own lawnchair! The lineup of stars donating
their time to this wonderful cause is a whoÕs who of the bluegrass
world!
